If you’re planning a trip to Crete, there’s one place that absolutely must make your itinerary: Knossos Palace.

Known as Europe’s oldest city, Knossos isn’t just an archaeological site—it’s a time capsule that opens a window into a civilization that thrived over 3,500 years ago. Located just 5 km south of Heraklion, it’s easy to reach whether you’re staying in the city or exploring the island.

Here’s everything you need to know before visiting this legendary site.

What is Knossos Palace?

Knossos was the heart of the Minoan civilization, which flourished on Crete during the Bronze Age (roughly 2000–1400 BC). The palace itself was a sprawling, multi-storied complex complete with courtyards, workshops, religious shrines, and even what many consider the world’s first flushing toilets.

But Knossos isn’t just impressive because of its architecture—it’s legendary because of its mythology. This is the home of King Minos, the Labyrinth, and the Minotaur. Walking through its corridors, it’s easy to see how these myths came to life.

Why Visit Knossos?

1. Step Into Myth and Legend

Whether you’re a history buff or just love a good story, Knossos is steeped in mythology. Imagine the tale of Theseus defeating the Minotaur or Daedalus designing the labyrinth—it all began here.

2. See History Come to Life

With vibrant frescoes, massive stone walls, and reconstructed sections by archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans, Knossos offers a glimpse into ancient life that feels surprisingly modern in parts.

3. Family-Friendly Exploration

Kids love exploring the palace’s maze-like layout. It’s an adventure for all ages, and a great way to turn history into an interactive experience.

4. A Short Trip from Heraklion

Knossos is only a 10–15 minute drive from Heraklion city center. You can easily combine your visit with a stop at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, which houses many of the palace’s original artifacts.

When Should You Visit?

The site is open year-round, but the best time to visit is during the shoulder seasons—April to early June, or September to October—when the weather is pleasant and the crowds are smaller.

Try to arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the midday heat, especially during summer months.

Ticket Information

As of 2025, general admission to Knossos Palace is around €15, but you can get a combined ticket for €20 that includes the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. EU citizens under 25 often get free or reduced tickets, so be sure to bring ID.

Tips for Your Visit

Wear comfortable shoes – The site is large and involves a fair bit of walking over uneven terrain.

Bring water and sunscreen – Shade is limited, and Crete’s sun is strong, even in spring and fall.

Hire a guide or audio tour – The ruins come alive when you understand what you’re seeing.

Combine with local experiences – After your visit, enjoy some Cretan cuisine at a nearby taverna or explore Heraklion’s vibrant old town.
